Cloud & cost

Why six are running, and what two would save.

#cloud-costprivate channel3 tool calls

Six identical instances, a question about why, and what two would save. It reads the instance group, a day of CPU per machine, and puts the saving beside the recommendation — a decision it hands to a person with the table already made.

@attest_tag what are these six webhook instances, why are six running, and what do they cost?

  • gcp_query_metrics · instance group aet-…-webhook · target size 6
  • gcp_query_metrics · cpu utilization · 6 instances · last 24h
  • run_js · monthly cost at 6 and at 2

Six identical webhook-handler VMs in a managed instance group, and six is the group’s configured target size — so all six are always up. About $70 a month together.

  • Average CPU over 24 hours: 1.5–2.5% per instance, with brief spikes to ~100% on two of them
  • At two instances: roughly $46 a month saved, with headroom for the spikes

They are real VMs, but they live in the staging project — the list you are looking at is testing’s. Console path below.

Names, figures, repositories and customers are changed; token counts and cost are illustrative. The ask, and the shape of the answer, are as they were.

How the turn went

What they are, whether six is right, and where they live.

  1. 01

    What are these

The instance group’s own metadata answers it: a managed group with a target size, which is why six are always running.

  2. 02

    Whether six is right

A day of CPU per instance from Monitoring, into the sandbox for averages and peaks. The recommendation carries the numbers it rests on.

  3. 03

    Where they are

“I don’t see these in the VM list” was answered by re-querying and naming the project — and giving the console path to find them.

What it needs

The setup, in the console.

Connection
The GCP monitoring preset, read-only, one connection per project, attached to the channel that asks about cost. Test connection makes the preset's check call before you save.
Credential
A service account key with the Viewer role for logs or monitoring on the project. Sealed with AES-256-GCM in the database; the proxy signs each request, and the key is never in a prompt.
Follow-ups
The thread keeps its context: “why are six running?” after “how many VMs?” needs no restating.

What it will not do

Enforced outside the model.

  • Resizing the group is a write the presets cannot make. It recommends; it does not act.

  • It answers from the metrics it can read, and says which project they came from.

Try it

Say it in a channel it is in.

The sentence as it was typed. It works in any channel the bot has been invited to that carries the connection above — no command syntax, no form, and follow-ups in the thread need no mention.
